Why I think it’s worth buying Blueland’s eco-friendly cleaners

I’ve taken small steps over the last few years to clean up my deed (literally). Instead of using parchment paper when baking my favorite gluten-free chocolate cakes, I use a silicone baking pad. And if it’s left to put in the fridge or freezer, I use recyclable Stasher bags instead of Ziplocs. However, my favorite eco-friendly development was by far my Blueland cleaners: the bottles are aesthetic, the products have a fresh but not overwhelming scent, and best of all, everything works extremely well.

When the world essentially came to a halt in March 2020, I, like many other people, found myself relying more than ever on delivery apps and e-merchants. But between all my food orders, dinner shipments, and Zara’s clothing shipments, I’ve been in an endless cycle of the process of reproducing empty boxes and recycling them. My carbon footprint grew and I wanted to do something about it. So when my husband and I bought an apartment about 10 months ago, I thought we could use a clean sheet in every sense of the word. And after seeing countless ads and laudatory reviews of Blueland Shark Tank’s famous cleaners, I decided to finally invest in them and make our new home a little greener.

The Blueland The Clean Essentials Kit includes three reusable acrylic bottles for the brand’s multi-surface cleaner, bathroom cleaner and glass + mirror cleaner, and a reusable glass bottle for foaming hand soap. As reported in our guide to environmentally friendly cleaning products, Blueland cleaning sprays are Safer Choice certified, which means that their ingredients meet the environmental and human health and safety criteria set by the Environmental Protection Agency. According to Blueland, the cleaners are free of parabens, ammonia, phthalates, chlorine bleach and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

In order to be as environmentally friendly as possible, Blueland designed the cleaners as tablets that dissolve in hot water. These tablets are wrapped in compostable paper and can be easily stored in a jar or container to keep on hand whenever you run out. (I keep mine in a Bodum container.) According to the nonprofit, all products and packaging are Cradle to Cradle certified, which means they have been shown to have a positive impact on the planet.

One thing I found particularly useful about Blueland is the Subscribe and Save option: Instead of having to remember buying new tablets, it’s set up to get them in the mail every two months. You can customize this to get new tablets every month, two months, three months, or four months, and you can cancel or pause them at any time.

While I was, of course, a little skeptical about the effectiveness of an eco-friendly cleaner, especially those available in tablet form, Blueland cleaners were immediately impressed. My husband and I can easily spend most of our time in the kitchen and Multi-Surface Cleaner on our proven marble countertops and hobs. We also have a frequently used glass coffee table and Glass + Mirror Cleaner easily wipes out coffee rings without leaving any noticeable streaks.

I was just as pleasantly surprised by the Foaming Hand Soap. Originally, this was the product I was most worried about: If the chalk tablet didn’t dissolve properly, it would be too noticeable when I used the soap on my hands. However, the soap tablets dissolve completely in about 15 minutes and give a foamy texture each time.

During the 10 months I used Blueland products, I had only a few hurries and nothing to do with cleaning products. The problem with hand soap tablets is that I really have to use it with a Blueland bottle – I tried to use the tablet in my own soap dispenser and ended up vomiting a sad combination of water and chalk. I also had problems with reusable bottles: I had to replace two of my reusable bottles – the foaming hand soap dispenser and the multi-surface cleaning bottle – because both had trouble dispensing the product.

One thing I found particularly useful about Blueland is the Subscribe and Save option: Instead of having to remember buying new tablets, it’s set up to get them in the mail every two months. You can customize this to get new tablets every month, two months, three months, or four months, and you can cancel or pause them at any time.

I recently expanded my Blueland collection and invested in the toilet cleaner starter kit and so far I am just as happy with these tablets. The effervescent pills conjure up the scent of lemon cedar all over the bathroom, and once they’ve explained their magic, all I have to do is rub the toilet quickly through the toilet cleaner. It actually cleans the toilet quickly.

Other environmentally friendly cleaning products to consider

If you want to compare Blueland’s offerings with other eco-friendly products on the market and explore more options, we’ve put together some other top-rated eco-friendly cleaners worth considering.

Branch Basics Premium Starter Kit

Like Blueland, Branch Basics offers reusable bottles – but the company supplies a liquid called The Concentrate for each product sold instead of tablets. The concentrate is billed as a multi-purpose, fragrance-free cleanser and is branded plant and mineral based. The Premium Starter Kit includes a 33.8-ounce bottle of The Concentrate, five reusable plastic bottles and the brand’s Oxygen Boost, designed for washing.

Cleancult complete home package

Cleancult products use a coconut oil base that is branded as environmentally friendly and safe for the skin. Like Blueland, Cleancult sells refillable bottles and dispensers – refills come in recyclable milk cartons and you can schedule their delivery every month, two months, three months or four months. When you buy the starter pack, you can choose from four colors for reusable bottles and three scents for the refill.
